Main contenders in the Walewale NPP primary race

The New Patriotic Party’s recent parliamentary primary election in the Walewale Constituency of the North East region has left the party and its supporters in a state of unending turmoil.

Hon. Alhaji Dr. Tiah Abdul-Kabiru Mahama was declared the winner in January’s NPP primaries by the Electoral Commission, but Hon. Hajia Lariba Zuwera Abudu who is the incumbent Member of Parliament representing the constituency in parliament refused to accept the outcome of the election which has led to a state of confusion and worry among voters and members of the ruling NPP in the constituency. Unsurprisedly, this action of the honourable MP has sparked an internal power struggle in the NPP in the Walewale constituency.

With these happenings in the constituency of the leader and flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, constituents had hoped for the swift intervention of the party’s hierarchy in resolving the existing impasse, unfortunately, that has not happened to date. Worse of all, some party executives in the constituency are spokespersons of the defeated member of parliament in direct contravention of the voice of delegates who voted in January to elect Hon. Alhaji Dr. Tiah Abdul-Kabiru as the NPP parliamentary candidate in the 2024 parliamentary and presidential elections (per the declaration of the EC until invalidated).

While this unending battle goes on in one of the important constituencies for the NPP in Ghana, the NPP Presidential candidate and the National Executive Council (NEC) of the NPP have maintained a deafening silence on the matter. In all honestly, their silence is deeply concerning for many reasons. Without a doubt, the unifying voice of His Excellency Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is worthy enough to resolve the impasse and unify the base of the party in the constituency. Therefore his silence and that of the National Executive Council have left many wondering with many unanswered questions in mind.

Delegates of the NPP in the Walewale Constituency spoke clearly through the ballot box, and their voice should be respected. The party must reaffirm EC’s declaration of Hon. Alhaji Tiah Abdul-Kabiru Mahama as the winner in the parliamentary primary, and encourage our honourable Member of Parliament Hon. Lariba Zuwera Abudu to accept defeat, support the candidate in the upcoming polls.

Anything less would be a betrayal of the trust placed in the party’s leadership and would definitely have disastrous implications in the polls on December 7th.

The clock is ticking and only time will tell.
