Millions of South Africans depend on social grants from SASSA to cover essential costs.
Starting October 2025, these grants will see a small but important increase.
Understanding what’s changing, who receives more, and how it affects your monthly payment is key.
Which grants are increasing in October 2025?
SASSA confirmed that several main grants will increase from 1 October 2025. These include:
- The Older Persons Grant (for those aged 60 to 74 and those 75 +).
- The Disability Grant.
- The Care Dependency Grant.
- The War Veterans Grant.
These increases apply in addition to an earlier adjustment from April 2025.
What are the new grant amounts from October 2025?
The specific increases from October 2025 are small but consistent. According to SASSA:
- Older Persons Grant (60-74 years) will increase from R2 310 to R2 320.
- Older Persons Grant (75+ years) will increase from R2 330 to R2 340.
- Disability Grant will increase from R2 310 to R2 320.
- Care Dependency Grant will likewise rise by R10 to R2 320.
- War Veterans Grant will increase from R2 330 to R2 340.
These increases mean that, from October, beneficiaries will receive the adjusted amounts automatically, without having to reapply.
Why is SASSA increasing the grant amounts?
The increases stem from the national budget for the 2025/26 financial year, where the government committed to providing additional support to vulnerable groups in the face of rising living costs.
SASSA stated that the October adjustment “reaffirms government’s commitment to protecting the most vulnerable in society”.
The small R10 increase is part of a two-phase increase (April + October) rather than a large one-time jump.
Do all grants get this increase?
No. While the main adult grants (Older Persons, Disability, Care Dependency, War Veterans) get the R10 bump in October, other grants may have different increases or timing. For example:
- The Child Support Grant was earlier increased from R530 to R560 from April 2025.
- The Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant remains at R370 per month as at the current published data.
So beneficiaries of those adult grants should benefit from the October increase, while others should check specific announcements for their grant type.
When will the increased amount be reflected in payments?
The increased rates apply from the October 2025 payment cycle.
That means the payment dates published for October (e.g., Older Persons on 2 October) will include the new amounts. For example:
- Older Persons Grant paid on Thursday, 2 October 2025.
- Disability Grant paid on Friday, 3 October 2025.
Beneficiaries should check their bank account or pay-point after their scheduled date and confirm the amount matches the new rate.
What should beneficiaries do ahead of the increase?
To ensure you receive the correct amount:
- Confirm your status is approved in the SASSA portal or status check system.
- Ensure your banking or payment method details are correct and that your account is active.
- If you changed your bank or pay-point, update your details before the start of the payment cycle.
- On or just after the payment date, check that your amount matches the new rate (for example R2 320 instead of R2 310).
- If you receive less than the new amount, contact SASSA immediately with your ID and payment reference.
