SASSA SRD Appeal Process – Check Your Appeal Status Online

If your SASSA SRD R370 application was rejected, you can still appeal the decision.

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) works with the Department of Social Development (DSD) to allow applicants to request a second review through an independent process.

What is the SASSA SRD appeal process?

The SASSA SRD appeal is a formal review process handled by the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA) under the DSD.

It gives applicants whose SRD grant applications were declined an opportunity to challenge the outcome.

Instead of SASSA reviewing your appeal internally, an independent team evaluates whether the rejection was justified based on your income, banking records, and eligibility data from other government systems such as SARS, NSFAS, and UIF.

This process ensures that anyone who genuinely qualifies for the R370 Social Relief of Distress grant can still receive payment, even after an initial rejection.

Who can submit an SRD appeal in 2025?

You can submit an appeal if your SRD R370 grant application for any month has been declined.

According to srd.sassa.gov.za, you must:

  1. Be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee living in South Africa.
  2. Be between 18 and 59 years old.
  3. Have no other form of income, employment, or government support such as UIF or NSFAS.
  4. Submit the appeal within 90 days of the rejection.

Each month of your SRD application is treated separately.

If your grant was declined for multiple months, you must submit an appeal for each month individually.

What are the common reasons for SRD grant rejections?

Before appealing, it helps to understand why your application was declined.

SASSA uses information from several databases to verify eligibility.

Common rejection reasons include:

  1. Alternative Income Source Identified: SASSA detected deposits or income exceeding R624 in your bank account.
  2. UIF Registered: You are listed as receiving or eligible for Unemployment Insurance Fund payments.
  3. NSFAS Beneficiary: You are receiving a student allowance through the National Student Financial Aid Scheme.
  4. Government Payroll Registered: You are employed in the public sector or receiving another social grant.
  5. Identity Verification Failed: Your ID or personal details do not match Home Affairs records.

If you believe any of these are incorrect, the appeal gives you a chance to fix them.

How to submit your SASSA SRD appeal online

The SRD appeal process is fully online. You do not need to visit a SASSA office.

Follow these steps to appeal:

  1. Visit the official DSD appeals website: https://srd.dsd.gov.za/appeals
  2. Enter your South African ID number and the mobile number used in your original SRD application.
  3. You will receive a One-Time PIN (OTP) via SMS — enter it to verify your identity.
  4. Select the month that was declined.
  5. Read the reason provided for your rejection.
  6. Click “Submit Appeal” and provide any extra information if requested.
  7. Confirm your submission.

You should receive a confirmation message that your appeal has been lodged successfully.

How long does the SASSA appeal process take?

According to the Department of Social Development, most appeals are reviewed within 60 to 90 days from submission.

However, times may vary depending on the volume of appeals received.

The Independent Tribunal assesses your data independently of SASSA, cross-checking it with updated government and banking information.

Once a decision is made, you’ll be notified via SMS.

If approved, your SRD R370 grant payment will be processed for that specific month and paid retroactively.

How to check your SRD appeal status online

To track the progress of your appeal:

  1. Go to https://srd.dsd.gov.za/appeals.
  2. Enter your ID number and cellphone number.
  3. Click “Track Appeal Status.”

You’ll see one of the following results:

  1. Pending: Your appeal is still under review.
  2. Approved: Your appeal was successful, and payment will be scheduled.
  3. Rejected: The Tribunal upheld the original decision.

You can check your appeal status anytime, as the system updates in real time once the decision is made.

What to do if your appeal is still pending or declined

If your appeal remains pending for longer than 90 days, contact SASSA or the DSD Appeals Helpline for assistance:

If your appeal is declined again, review the stated reason carefully.

You may reapply for the next cycle of the SRD grant if your financial situation has changed.

Remember, each month is reassessed separately, so you could qualify in the future even after a rejection.

What happens after a successful appeal?

If your appeal is approved, your payment will be processed for that specific month.

The funds will be deposited into your registered bank account or made available for collection at Shoprite, Pick n Pay, Boxer, or other SASSA-approved retail partners.

Your future months will still be reviewed individually, so continue checking your status at srd.sassa.gov.za to confirm ongoing eligibility.
