How to Check if Your Federal Tax Refund Check Was Cashed

If you need to confirm whether your federal refund check has been cashed, you can start a refund trace using any of the following options:

  1. Use the “Where’s My Refund?” online tool.
  2. Call 800-829-1954 (toll-free) to access the automated refund system.
  3. To speak directly with a representative, call 800-829-1040 (see below for hours).

Important:

  • If you filed jointly (married filing jointly), you must speak with a representative — automated systems cannot process joint refund traces.
  • You may also complete and mail Form 3911 (Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund) to initiate a trace.
  • If you need a photocopy of your refund check due to a payment dispute, contact the IRS by phone to request assistance.

By law, the IRS cannot share refund information about another person unless you have proper authorization. To access someone else’s refund information, you must submit Form 2848 (Power of Attorney and Declaration of Representative) or Form 8821 (Tax Information Authorization).
